Jaipur is Rajasthan's capital and one of India's most photogenic cities. Here's how to see the best of it in a single day with a private car.
Morning: The Forts (7:00 AM – 12:00 PM)
7:00 AM — Amber Fort
Start early to beat the crowds and heat. This 16th-century fort is Jaipur's crown jewel — massive ramparts, intricate mirror work in Sheesh Mahal, and stunning views of Maota Lake. Plan 2-2.5 hours.
Tip: The walk up is steep. Elephant rides are available but controversial — consider the jeep or walk.
10:00 AM — Nahargarh Fort
A 15-minute drive from Amber. Panoramic views over Jaipur city. Less crowded and perfect for photos.
11:00 AM — Jal Mahal (Drive-by)
The floating palace in Man Sagar Lake. You can't enter, but the view from the road is iconic.
Afternoon: The City (12:00 PM – 5:00 PM)
12:00 PM — Hawa Mahal
The Palace of Winds — Jaipur's most famous facade. Quick stop for photos from the street, or enter for views from the windows.
12:30 PM — City Palace
The royal family's residence (they still live in part of it). Beautiful architecture, museum with royal artifacts, and the famous large silver urns.
1:30 PM — Lunch
Eat at LMB (Laxmi Misthan Bhandar) on Johari Bazaar for authentic Rajasthani thali, or try Tapri Central for a modern cafe experience.
2:30 PM — Jantar Mantar
The royal astronomical observatory. UNESCO World Heritage Site with massive stone instruments built in the 1700s.
3:30 PM — Albert Hall Museum
Victorian architecture housing Rajasthani art and artifacts. The building itself is worth seeing.
Evening: Shopping & Sunset (5:00 PM onwards)
5:00 PM — Johari Bazaar & Bapu Bazaar
Shop for block-printed textiles, juttis (traditional shoes), lac bangles, and gemstones. Bargaining is expected and part of the experience.
6:30 PM — Sunset at Nahargarh Fort
If you have energy left, drive back up to Nahargarh for sunset over the Pink City. Padao restaurant at the fort serves decent food with incredible views.
Getting Around Jaipur
Jaipur's attractions are spread across 15-20 km. A car with driver is essential — auto-rickshaws in Jaipur are persistent and exhausting to negotiate with.
