Ladakh by Car — The Ultimate Leh, Pangong & Nubra Valley Road Trip

Plan the trip of a lifetime to Ladakh. Route options from Manali and Srinagar, permit requirements, acclimatization tips, and what to expect on the world's highest roads.

Ladakh is India's final frontier — a high-altitude desert of surreal landscapes, ancient monasteries, and roads that rank among the world's most dramatic. It's not an easy trip, but it's one you'll never forget.

Getting to Leh

Option 1: Fly to Leh

Quick (1.5 hours from Delhi) but you'll need 1-2 days to acclimatize to the altitude (3,500m). Then hire a car locally for excursions.

Option 2: Drive from Manali (480 km, 2 days)

The iconic route over Rohtang Pass and Tanglang La (one of the world's highest motorable passes). Open June–September only.

Option 3: Drive from Srinagar (420 km, 2 days)

Through the Kashmir Valley, over Zoji La pass, and along the Indus River. Scenic and slightly easier than the Manali route.

Suggested Itinerary (7-8 Days)

Day 1-2: Acclimatize in Leh

  • Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, local market
  • Stay hydrated, walk slowly, avoid exertion
  • Critical: Do NOT skip acclimatization. Altitude sickness is real and dangerous.

Day 3: Leh → Nubra Valley (120 km, 5 hrs)

  • Cross Khardung La (one of the highest motorable roads)
  • Diskit Monastery, Hunder sand dunes, double-humped Bactrian camels

Day 4: Nubra Valley

  • Turtuk village (India's last village before Pakistan border)
  • Incredible apricot orchards and Balti culture

Day 5: Nubra → Pangong Lake (280 km, 7-8 hrs)

  • The famous blue lake on the India-China border
  • The 3 Idiots filming location
  • Camp overnight by the lake

Day 6: Pangong → Leh (160 km, 5 hrs)

  • Return via Chang La pass
  • Stop at Thiksey Monastery (mini Potala Palace)

Day 7: Leh Exploration

  • Hemis Monastery, magnetic hill, Sangam (confluence of Indus and Zanskar rivers)

Day 8: Departure

Essential Information

Permits

Inner Line Permits are required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Turtuk. Your driver/hotel can arrange these in Leh (₹400-600 per person).

Health Precautions

  • Altitude sickness is the biggest risk. Symptoms: headache, nausea, breathlessness
  • Acclimatize for 2 full days before going higher
  • Stay hydrated (3-4 liters/day)
  • Carry Diamox (consult your doctor first)

What to Carry

  • Warm clothing (even in summer, nights drop to 0°C)
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ (high altitude UV is intense)
  • Cash — ATMs in Leh are unreliable, and there are none beyond
  • Medication and first aid

Driving Conditions

  • Unpaved roads, river crossings, loose gravel, and no guardrails
  • Only experienced high-altitude drivers should attempt this
  • An SUV (Innova or equivalent) is essential — sedans won't survive these roads
