Northeast India is the country's best-kept secret — dramatically different from the rest of India in culture, cuisine, landscape, and atmosphere. Think Scotland's mist, Southeast Asia's forests, and uniquely Indian warmth.
Why Northeast India?
- Uncrowded: While Rajasthan and Goa overflow with tourists, the Northeast is peaceful
- Unique culture: Tribal heritage, distinct cuisine, and a way of life unlike anywhere else in India
- Stunning nature: Waterfalls, living root bridges, tea gardens, river islands, and clouds you can walk through
- Friendly people: Northeast India is known for its hospitality
Key Destinations
Shillong (Meghalaya)
The "Scotland of the East." Pleasant weather year-round, waterfalls, caves, and the rock music capital of India. Base for exploring Meghalaya.
Cherrapunji / Sohra (Meghalaya)
One of the wettest places on Earth. Living root bridges, Nohkalikai Falls (India's tallest plunge waterfall), and mystical cloud cover.
Dawki (Meghalaya)
Crystal-clear Umngot River where boats appear to float in mid-air. The photos aren't edited — the water really is that transparent.
Mawlynnong (Meghalaya)
The "Cleanest Village in Asia." A community that takes pride in spotless streets and living root bridges.
Kaziranga (Assam)
Home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceros. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jeep and elephant safaris available.
Majuli (Assam)
The world's largest river island. Ancient Vaishnavite monasteries (Satras), mask-making traditions, and a culture that's slowly disappearing as the island erodes.

Driving in Northeast India
Roads vary from excellent (NH-6 to Shillong) to adventurous (rural Meghalaya). A local driver who knows the terrain is essential — GPS isn't always reliable in remote areas.
Best Time to Visit
- October–April: Best weather, clear skies
- Monsoon (June-September): Heavy rain but the landscape is ethereal. Living root bridges are at their most impressive.
