India Visa Guide — Tourist, Business & E-Visa Process Explained

Step-by-step guide to getting an Indian visa. Covers e-Visa, tourist visa, business visa, processing times, and common mistakes to avoid.

Getting an Indian visa is straightforward if you know the process. Here's a practical guide covering the most common visa types for travelers.

E-Visa (Easiest Option)

The Indian e-Visa is available for citizens of 160+ countries and is the quickest way to get travel authorization.

Types of E-Visa

  • e-Tourist Visa: 30 days (double entry) or 1 year / 5 years (multiple entry)
  • e-Business Visa: 1 year, multiple entry
  • e-Medical Visa: 60 days, triple entry

How to Apply

  1. Visit the official e-Visa website
  2. Fill the application form (15-20 minutes)
  3. Upload passport photo and passport scan
  4. Pay the fee online (varies by nationality, typically $10-80)
  5. Receive approval via email within 72 hours (usually faster)
  6. Print the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) and carry it

Important Notes

  • Apply at least 4 days before travel (recommended: 2 weeks)
  • e-Visa is valid for entry at designated airports and seaports only (all major ones are included)
  • You need at least 6 months validity on your passport

Regular Visa (via Embassy/VFS)

For longer stays, work, or if your nationality isn't eligible for e-Visa.

Process

  1. Fill the application on the Indian government visa website
  2. Book an appointment at VFS Global or the Indian embassy
  3. Submit documents: passport, photos, travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, financial statements
  4. Processing time: 5-15 working days
  5. Collect passport with visa stamp

Common Mistakes

  1. Passport validity — must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
  2. Photo specifications — white background, 2x2 inches, specific format
  3. Incomplete form — double-check every field before submitting
  4. Last-minute application — allow at least 2 weeks, ideally a month

On Arrival

  • Fill out the arrival card on the plane (or at immigration)
  • Keep your return ticket and hotel booking confirmation handy
  • Immigration is usually smooth at major airports (15-30 minutes)
